The Brush Can Make All The Difference

Just like people have different textures and types of hair, dogs have different coats that require different tools for care.  For example some breeds can have a double coat (a soft, insulating undercoat and a tougher, water –repelling topcoat).  With double coated breeds, the undercoat should be de-shedded a minimum of twice a year, in spring and fall, otherwise the undercoat can get stuck and create matts, overheating, or hotspots.  It can make it much easier to keep your dog’s hair and skin in good shape if you know the right brush to use.  Here are the tools I would recommend …

  1. General purpose slicker brush for brushing through top coat on all breeds.
  2. Curry brush for use on short hair breeds like Labrador retrievers. This works great for getting out loose hair and reducing shedding.
  3. Undercoat rake for de-shedding heavy coated and long haired breeds. Use a gentle touch.  Keep brushing until no more hair comes out with the brush.  This will help brighten the coat.
  4. Andis rake also for de-shedding heavy coated and long haired breeds. This brush has a blade on it that actually cuts the hair, so go easy.  The cutting ability can be useful to thin out areas where the hair is extra thick like the ruff and pants areas.
  5. De-matting brush. The wire bristles are bent and help to brush through matts.  Start at the outer edge of the matt and work inward.  Do this before bathing as bathing will tighten the matt.
  6. Greyhound comb. This metal comb helps to find matts in the coats of all breeds, but should not be used to comb out a matt , only to find them.  The comb also helps to fluff the hair.
  7. Stripping knife or carding tool. Use this on the backs of spaniels or terriers to get out undercoat.  Like the rakes, you want to go easy and be gentle.   This process also makes for a shinier coat.

How long should I brush my dog?  Keep brushing until little to no hair comes out in the brush.  If you brush consistently with the right brush it can decrease shedding throughout your house, reduce the occurrence of matts, and increase the comfort of your dog by stimulating healthy oils in your dog’s skin.

Happy Dog…Happy Life…Happy Brushing!!
